REVIEW: Amaya Sea Food Restaurant – Kuwait

Went there 2 weeks ago with my wife, a friend of ours recommended it. Its in Mishref, in the Coop branch and it was pretty hard to find, we spent more then 15 minutes driving around Mishref looking for it because all what the address says is Mishref – Coop Branch – Block 3  without a street name or number detail and a block in Mishref is pretty big… I later figured out that there is a map on their website (but the map do not have a street number as well).
First look: Got there and first thing that hit us was the size, its very small, there was 4 tables (4 persons each) which is fine, it gives it a cosy feel. The restaurant is mostly furnished from IKEA, even the decoration materials, which is also fine since its a small business as of now. Its well and minimally decorated and clean (but table matts were not clean).Â
Inside / Interior: As well, when we first walked in, there was a strong smell of (raw) fish, because the exposed open fish fridge was very close to the tables + there is no AC return system (which usually sucks in air from inside to filter it out), its actually normal home AC units (2 of them) mounted on the side wall which was annoying because it was blowing on us and we had to move to another table which was near by one of the AC that was turned off.
Menu: Menu is simple and most of the items had their pictures with good descriptions. You chose your fish from the menu (or from the fish fridge display) then you chose how you want it cooked: grilled, in the oven or fried. You then chose the sauce (how you want it marinated).
Food: Appetiser, we had the Fire Cracker Spring Rolls, it had too much spices and chili, that’s all I could taste, it took away the taste of the crab and shrimp fillings. Dill rice (on the side for the fish) which was not good, not much flavor and was not cooked enough. For the Fish we had the Baloul (3kg) we had half of it baked in the oven with Far East Marination and the other half was grilled with Western Marination.
Fish was great, well cooked and marination was good BUT the only down side is that since the fish is freshly cooked, it did not have enough time to marinate and blend well enough with the sauce (marinated fish usually has much more taste) but it was good as it was and we liked both types.
Price: Prices are fair for the portions.
The goods: Good fish – good prices – friendly staff – waiter knows about the fish and dishes they serve – cosy ambiance.
The bads: Fish smell – AC & Ventilation
We would definitely come back again and recommend it to friends who wants good fish.
